endocrine system A group of glands in the body that produce substances called hormones. The thyroid, ovary, and pancreas are all glands of the endocrine system.

hormone A chemical compound that is produced in a gland and then carried to another part of the body by the blood. Hormones control many important body activities, such as growth. Hormones act by causing and adjusting chemical reactions in the body.

steroid A type of chemical compound that is found in living things and has many actions in the body. Sex hormones, cholesterol, and bile are kinds of steroids. Some steroids are used as medicines and can be made in a laboratory.
